The school was founded at Heathcote House on Danbury Common, in 1935 when Mrs. K. Latham opened a school in the village of Danbury. The school name came from the original house.

Children were drawn from all around the school with families such as the Coopers, Speakmans and the Royces amongst the first to join the school which opened with about seven children. Classes were held in the school house and there is still a row of named coatpegs to be seen in the cupboard under the stairs. The children were known to the local children as ‘The Hot Sausages'. (HS)

Around the beginning of the war the school moved to its present position in the centre of the village. The school also acquired as Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Beth Grigsby who assisted Mrs. Latham in the running of the school together with Mrs. Robinson (Music). These three ladies taught everything between them.

Famous past pupils include Marty Feldman - a famous comic and film star. Marty is known for his enthusiastic use of a cymbal in a music lesson. He hit it so hard that he broke the strap and the cymbal fell to the floor. Mrs. Latham swiftly, but discreetly opened the bodice of her dress, removed a string from some piece of underwear, attached it to the cymbal and the class continued. The Spencer brothers also came to the school and were child film stars in the 1950's.
