The Form I year

During the year the children in Form 1 complete the following:-

Literacy- Children increase their knowledge of phonics and reading strategies, develop confidence in independent writing and learn the basics of writing sentences and simple punctuation. A wide variety of texts are studied and knowledge of familiar stories are used as a basis for children to produce their own books.

Maths- Children develop the ability to count more accurately, order numbers, begin to understand place value and learn number bonds to 10. They also learn more of the processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and study shape, time and measures.

Science- Form 1 science topics include Forces, Sound, Light, Materials, Electricity, Plants and Animals.

Topic ( incorporating History and Geography)
Autumn Term- Dinosaurs, including a trip to the Dinosaur park near Norwich.

Spring Term- Cavemen. During this term a caveman visit's the school and teaches caveman skills such as flint knapping.

Summer Term- Signs and Symbols.
Art and Technology- These assignments follow up other areas of the curriculum, develop the children's fine motor skills and give them the opportunity to explore the use of different mediums.

Form 1 also continue French, Music, IT and R.E at an appropriate level.

Homework- The children are encouraged to read to parents every day and work on any vocabulary they are having difficulty with. They also receive three homework assignments each week.

This Term

During this term the children in Form 1 are encouraged to demonstrate greater independence at school. The main topic of study this term is Dinosaurs and will encompass work in all areas of the curriculum. Later in the term we plan to visit the Dinosaur park near Norwich, which is a great place for active learning.

Literacy work will focus on revising and extending phonics knowledge, reading and the study of the "Harry and the Dinosaurs" books.

In numeracy, the children will extend their knowledge of numbers, counting, the number system and place value. Activities that promote a greater understanding of addition and subtraction will also be carried out as well as work on shapes and measures.

Science work for the term will focus upon the topics of Forces, Sound and Light.
