My First Day at School - Children

For many children their first day at school is often a mix of excitement and nerves, tears and laughter.  It is often a good idea to plan something special at the end of the day for them to look forward to.  Try to get together with other children in their class before the term begins so that they have friends to meet in the playground and play with before the bell goes.  Plan which piece of tuck they would like to have (but please remember no nuts or chocolate).  Try to ensure that you are on time as children dislike having to walk into their class after everybody else has gone in.

My First Day at School - Parents

For some parents their first time for leaving their child in school all day can be a little stressful.  We would offer these ideas for your consideration:

1) Ensure that your child is used to spending longer periods of time away from you to avoid separation anxieties.

2) Arrange to meet some friends for a coffee to help take your mind off your child and their day.

3) Remember - the office has your contact details and if there is a problem we will always contact you.   Parents may also telephone the office

to check on their child's well-being.

4) Once your child is in the main school try to leave them at the door.  It is important for them to start building their independence away from you and

learning to sort their coats and bags out themselves.

5) Encourage your child to show you their classroom and talk about what has been happening in it - if they are a little reluctant to talk about their day

bathtimes are often a good time when children will freely discuss their day.

Taster Days for the Children

Starting school is a big step; both for children and their parents. We appreciate that it is an anxious time for all concerned.

It is important that all children are welcomed into a warm and caring environment where they are going to be happy and enjoy learning. The staff go to great lengths to achieve this.

Before applying for a place parents are very welcome to visit the school to talk to the Principal and see the children at work. Appointments to visit may be made through the school office. Before the children start they are invited to attend induction sessions to meet their teacher and class-mates. The Principal also holds briefing meetings for parents where they can discuss this important event in their child's life.
