Environmental Day

Amelia and Maisie, Year 5

On the 27th of April, we had a fabulous day coming our way! Lucy from the Essex Wildlife trust came in to help us with our knowledge of wildlife so we could enjoy our jam-packed day even more.

Year 5 and 6 started the day of with making a mini pond and wormery for the science garden to become eco-friendly. The wormery was made out of gravel, sand, soil and very smelly compost. At the same time Year 6 were being busy bees by making a pond for wildlife to enjoy.

Year 3 and 4 strolled down to the woods to fetch materials to make bird nests and to refurbish the Ugly Bugly Hotel to become the five star hotel! Meanwhile, KS1 were making welly hospitals and fairy gardens to decorate the science garden. The wellies were recycled (which was a coincidence because we are trying to recycle more) to become a plant pot to display a collection of flowers. The little children were making fairies and fairy doors to hide around the garden for the little ones to love.

To make the garden complete we needed to add a variety of plants, for example, herbs such as mint and basil. Year 4 also made fruit kebabs for the wildlife that would visit our garden. Also, we planted flower seeds in the soil so they could become beautiful and bold wild flowers.

We really enjoyed this experience, and hopefully the flowers will bloom to complete this refurbished space. Thank you to Mrs Maingot and Lucy for organising this wonderful day for Heathcote.

Our New Science Garden in the making…
