Excellence is at the heart of all we do

“We will not have failure – only success and new learning.” Queen Victoria

Melissa and Maisie, Year 6

On the 12th of March, Year 6 went on a school trip to Braintree Museum to learn more about the Victorian era.  Everyone dressed in Victorian costumes.

We arrived at the museum and travelled back in time to begin a Victorian school day by being asked a variety of questions about our reigning monarch, Queen Victoria.  In maths, we had to recite the different measurements and learn how to add pounds, shillings and pence.  We wrote on slates and when giving our answer we had to stand up and address the teacher as ma’am.  In Geography, we looked at the different countries Queen Victoria reigned over.  At the end of the school day we sang the National Anthem.

It was very interesting because there were lots of different rules that we weren’t used to, such as: you couldn’t giggle, talk, turn around and if you were left handed you had to write with your right hand.

We looked at and passed around items used by Victorians in their daily life, such as a dolly and dolly basin for washing clothes, a jelly mould, lemon juicer and bacon hook.  We completed a Victorian booklet, visited the gift shop and had a look around the museum’s gallery.

We really enjoyed this trip and learning lots of facts about the Victorians.
