At Heathcote we believe the best learners are happy learners who are respected and involved in their education. In Key Stage 2, teaching is more subject based, although pupils are still mainly taught by their form teacher who combines close pastoral care with academic support. The children continue to follow a broad curriculum including Mathematics, English and Science together with History, Geography, PE, Computing, French, Drama, Music, PSHRE, CRE, Swimming and Art. Many external visits and visitors help to broaden and inspire learning in these subjects.
In Year 6, children are selected to take on responsibilities. These range from being Head Boy or Head Girl to being Sports Captain for their House or a Library Monitor. As part of their duties they speak in whole school assembly each week and are involved in the organisation of different aspects of school life. Throughout the school there is an exceptionally good relationship between all of the children and we foster mutual respect and good manners as a core value of Heathcote.
We keep parents closely informed about their child’s progress. We promote close links between home and school and parents often pop in for a chat when they drop off or collect their children. The small class sizes ensure that teachers know every child as an individual and treat them as such. There is a large emphasis on pastoral support and ensuring that our children are well cared for and enjoying their school experience is of paramount importance to us.
We have high aspirations for all of our children and want them to leave Heathcote as confident, determined and resilient individuals, who have acquired a life-long love of learning and will be very successful at Secondary School, and beyond. Our children go on to a broad range of Secondary Schools and we work in partnership with parents to ensure that those who wish to take the 11+ or other Secondary Entrance tests are well prepared.
